Pregnancy Induced Carpal Tunnel

Ok - for the most part I am enjoying this whole pregnancy thing...:)
for probably the past month i have woken up with a hand that is very much asleep, but once i got going it was fine.
however, ever since last friday i have had CONSTANT tingly and numbness on my right hand...specifically my thumb, pointer finger and middle finger.
i wake up a couple times during the night with some severe swelling/numbness feeling/pain...it is the wierdest thing -you look down expecting your hand to be 3 times the size and it isn't. i have taken off my wedding rings because of the swelling for fear they would have to be cut off like the one off of my right hand. :( ....talk about trusting your husband.
i work at a computer all day - every day and not typing isn't really an options but i was wondering if any one had any suggestions.
i am taking extra vitamin b6 - trying to sleep with a straight arm (obnoxious) and trying to rest my hand throughout the day.
anyways - just wanted to vent.....

Hmmm - the only thing that I could think of is to make sure that you're drinking LOTS of water. I read that the more you drink the better at reducing/staving off swelling.
Let us know if anything works. bummer

hey sherry. how are you guys? so excited to hear about your pregnancy!! just thought i would share: my mom always struggled with carpal tunnel until she finally had surgery on both her hands a couple of years ago. BUT...she always said that something that improved the problem considerably was wearing a brace to bed at night. you can buy them at Walgreen's, CVS, etc, and they aren't super expensive. worth a try I guess. praying for you guys!

Hey Sherry,
I had/have the same thing with both pregnancies. Some things that have helped were like Michayla said wearing the braces. They don't look the greatest but keep you from sleeping on it weird. Elevating it if you can and ice help too. Tylenol helps if you can. It can be so annoying so I know what you're talking about. Hope it feels better soon!

hey sherry, sorry about this new nagging ailment... isn't pregnancy great... it only gets better, just wait til you get hemeroids!

i was just going to suggest what michayla and shannon said...wrist braces... i had carpel tunnel symptoms when i was taking care of kalynn, paul, preston, and anna... carrying the heavy car seat everywhere etc... i wore wrist braces to bed... kinda annoying, but a cheap remedy... and it should help some.

i hope you feel better soon. keep blogging even if it is "venting" i love hearing from/about you.

love you,

janelle

I had pregnancy induced carpal tunnel during the last half of my pregnancy. I wore a wrist brace as well as had my chiropractor adjust my wrist - it worked wonders! It went away about a month after Elijah was born. Hopefully you can get some rest!!

You might try increasing your intake of calcium also...that helps sometimes also!
I can relate to the tingling...but I get it in my legs and feet!! Oh...and at times, my ankles DO look like they are 3 sizes to big...oh well, only a few more weeks to go!!

Sherry, I'm so sorry to hear about your symptoms! I have absolutely no advice for you so I will have to suggest ice cream. And lots of it. Let me know if your symptoms persist & then we'll move on to chocolate. And lots of it. Generally these two prescriptions will fix whatever ails you ;-)
Seriously, I'll pray that the situation resolves or that you at least can find a remedy to control it. Take care!

i'm sure i've got something in some of my rehab books...def. recommend a brace though especially at nights. Tylenol will help with pain, but it won't do much for the inflamation in the tunnel. You can ice a bunch for that...20 min. on, 20 min off and i've got a bunch of stretching exercises and what not on a rehab sheet...(if i can find it:-/) I will see what i can find and catch ya at church.

I have carpel tunnel with this pregnancy in both wrists, and in my right arm when I was pregnant with Sara. ..I sleep with a brace on every night--one on each arm. . .most nights, although I have tried to stop wearing the one, but usually wake up in the middle of the night in pain and have to put the other one on. .. Matt teases me about being a bowling champion with my weird braces on my arms:) I couldn't sleep without my braces, aside from my hands and arms going tingly and numb, I have terrible pain that shoots down to my elbows!! Try a brace and see if that helps:)

My mother in law would recommend vitamin c....she has read or heard that it fixes everything :P

Hey Sherry - I'm with Liesl, in 4 1/2 pregnancies, I've never heard about that either. But I'm praying for you as I read your post. And I'm with your other commenters - vent as much as you want, we've been there. It's definately worth it all, but still not fun all the time - and for some of us, not even most of the time!
